New York Ophthalmologist Hosts Free Macular Degeneration Webinar
Macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness in the world, dealing a devastating blow to sufferers’ independence and quality of life. Fortunately, it’s preventable through eye-healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices, says Rudrani Banik, M.D., a specialist in ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, and headache, and the founder and medical director of EnVision Health NYC.
Every Wednesday in March, from 5 to 6 p.m., Banik will host a free Macular Degeneration Masterclass webinar, to educate the public about preventing this debilitating disease.
“Not only can macular degeneration reduce your precious eyesight, but it can also steal many of the joys of living, such as being able to read, drive, work, watch television and, most importantly, see the faces of your loved ones one's ones,” she says.
Certain eye-specific nutrients—lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin—can protect against oxidative damage to the macula from potentially damaging UV and blue light, Banik says.
“These natural pigments act as our eyes’ internal sunglasses and blue blockers,” she explains. “Macular pigment is often diminished in macular degeneration. Thus it is critical to replenish our macular pigment by eating a diet rich in foods that provide these nutrients, as well as supplements to protect against vision loss and potential blindness.”
Banik is an associate professor of ophthalmology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an associate director of neuro-ophthalmology at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.
