Essential Oils and Yoga

By Dana Costantino

Frankincense is known as the “oil of truth.” The scent of this ancient essential oil aids in reducing stress levels and bringing your personal energy level to a deeper state of meditation. This is why many yoga practitioners turn to frankincense when they begin a practice of restorative yoga or meditation.

If your practice is taking a more active approach, as in a power yoga class or an intense ashtanga class, lemon oil would be a beneficial ally, due to its lively appeal. Lemon essential oil creates a sense of joy and uplifts the spirit as it elevates mood levels. This oil often elicits positive memories which inspires movement.

There are many ways to incorporate essential oils into your yoga or meditation practice. Below are several suggestions to take your next session to the next level with essential oils:

- Sprinkle a few drops on your mat before beginning your practice.

- Open the essential oil bottle, place it under your nose, and tak a deep inhale.

- Put several drops of oil into a diffuser and keep it nearby.

- Place a few drops of oil into a lit candle.

- Buy incense with the scent of lemon or frankincense.

- Place one or two drops of oil onto your wrists, rub them together, and take a deep inhale.

- If you have food grade essential oils, you can also sprinkle a few drops into water or tea and drink prior to and during practice.

Centering yourself and getting to a state of true calm and self-reflection sometimes needs a helping hand. Essential oils can be a wonderful solution.
