East Village Is Home to Manhattan’s Only Storefront Food Co-Op

“Food for people, not for profit.” That’s the motto of the 4th Street Food Co-op, Manhattan’s only storefront food co-op, which is open to the public and entirely volunteer staffed. “Not only can anybody shop here, but discounts are given to seniors, students, EBT recipients and members of other co-ops around the world,” says volunteer Jason Trachtenburg.

The produce at the co-op is 100 percent organic and, whenever possible, locally grown, he says. The bulk foods section—also all organic—offers a wide variety of every health food staple, including legumes, rice, grains, flours, pastas, nuts, seeds, dried fruits and even seaweed.

There is also a large bulk spice and tea section featuring a hundred varieties of herbs and seasonings. The store started as the Good Harvest Food Co-op in 1973 and has been in its current East Village incarnation since 1995. It has retained its original character due to a steady stream of customers from throughout the city and its diverse and knowledgeable volunteers. Working co-op members get a 20 percent discount, while non-working members get an 8 percent discount.

“Everyone is welcome to shop, learn and create a community based on the foundations of health and sustainability. Whether you’re transitioning to a cleaner and more wholesome diet or have been on the health food scene for decades, 4th Street Food Co-op will exceed your expectations for a healthy, fun and affordable shopping experience.”

Location: 58 E. 4th St. (between 2nd Avenue and Bowery). For more information, visit Instagram.com/4thstreetfoodcoop/.
