5 Effective Supplements for Mood and Anxiety

By Dr. Jillian Finker

Magnesium, lecithin, inositol, L-glycine and L-theanine are five of my favorite supplements to help elevate mood and ease anxiety. They balance gently, yet they function effectively, and they rarely interact with other medications. These supplements work well on their own, but when used together, they can have a synergistic effect—supporting better sleep, a brighter mood and a calmer demeanor.

  1. Magnesium L-threonate
This is one of the best forms of magnesium because it crosses the blood–brain barrier. By boosting the brain’s magnesium levels, it supports stress management, sleep quality and healthy mood balance.

  2. Lecithin (sunflower-sourced)
Lecithin helps blunt the stress response and balance mood, often preventing depression.

  3. Inositol
Inositol helps quiet the mind, promotes relaxation and supports a better mood. It facilitates the metabolism of serotonin, the “feel-good neurotransmitter,” and can also balance female hormones by normalizing testosterone levels in patients with PCOS.

  4. L-Glycine
L-glycine promotes calm during the day, improves sleep quality and even helps with acute panic attacks. It tastes naturally sweet, so placing some under the tongue when anxious symptoms begin can be very effective.

  5. L-Theanine
L-theanine is one of my favorite supplements when used as a monotherapy. It can work almost as well as a beta blocker to ease acute performance anxiety—without inhibiting cognitive function. Extracted from green tea, it’s generally well tolerated. L-theanine also reduces irritability and supports overall relaxation.

Over the years, I’ve seen these supplements provide tremendous benefit—whether used individually or together. Patients often report feeling calmer, sleeping better and experiencing an overall lift in mood. Side effects are minimal, though overdosing can cause digestive upset.

I’m grateful we have access to these natural therapeutics that work so well and with such gentle support. As always, supplements should be taken as directed under the guidance of a naturopathic doctor.
