Recently I witnessed a historic moment in the long arc of human evolution: we are now able to produce rapid spiritual awakening on a consistent basis.

How is this possible?

Recent advances in brain imaging techniques indicate that the human brain is hardwired for enlightenment.

Dr. Andrew Newberg, professor of nuclear medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and author of the acclaimed book Why God Won’t Go Away, imaged the brains of Tibetan Buddhists during meditation. The images indicated that during deep meditation, the prefrontal cortex is energized with an increase in blood flow and then assumes the role of the brain’s new experiential center. The brain then perceives itself as endless and interwoven with everyone and everything. Newberg calls this “the state of Absolute Unitary Being,” or “the Oneness State.”

Richard Davidson, PhD, has performed research at the University of Wisconsin that corroborates Newberg’s findings. He worked with the Dalai Lama, who sent his most accomplished meditators to Davidson’s laboratory for a scientific study, which revealed very high activity in the prefrontal cortex during deep meditation.

The research suggests that the process of enlightenment is not due to psychological change or a change in philosophy and values. Enlightenment is primarily due to a change in brain dominance from lower structures to the higher structure of the prefrontal cortex.
