Spread the Love ... To You

As the traditional “month of love” kicks off, why not give a little love to someone who works pretty darn hard all year round—you?

Start your self-love regimen with the basics: what you eat. There are a plethora of scientific studies showing that the quality of our diet affects our risk of death and diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. The short-term benefits of good nutrition are well documented too. Making better food choices can boost energy levels, decrease fatigue, ease digestive issues and even improve your skin.

Here are some easy ways to start eating better:

• Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables—four or five servings per day. Eating a variety of colors ensures that you’re taking in a variety of nutrients.

• At least half your total grain intake should be from whole grains (whole-wheat bread, brown rice, etc.).

• Choose from a variety of proteins, including lean meats such as poultry, nuts and seeds, soy products, eggs, beans and peas.

• Visit ChooseMyPlate.gov and make sure your meals resemble the MyPlate diagram.

A dietary change can be just the self-love you need, and just what the doctor (or registered dietitian) ordered.
