Chair Yoga Teacher Training at New York Open Center

Everyone can benefit from yoga, but many people can’t get to the floor due to age, handicap or inflexibility. This month the New York Open Center will host a teacher training in Chair Yoga, which accommodates students who can’t take a traditional yoga class for physical reasons. The three-and-a-half-day training will run from March 20 to 23, with a free introductory class offered March 8 at 6 p.m.

“Chair yoga replaces the mat, and the chair becomes an extension of the body, allowing you to take full advantage of yoga’s health potential,” says Brenda Yarnold, the director of Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga (LVCY), who will lead the training.

In this training, students will learn Sun and Moon Salutations, Warrior Series, Double Chair Yoga, Pair Chair Yoga and Weighted Chair Yoga.

Additionally, the training will cover several Eastern disciplines and modalities, including Pa Tuan Chin; acupressure knee-strengthening exercises; various breathing techniques; seven chakras (their meanings, colors, sounds and affirmations); five yamas and five niyamas; and Do-In Chinese self-massage and foot reflexology.

Participants must have at least 15 hours of yoga experience. They will earn 25 CEUs, receive a 175-page manual, gain access to the LVCY online teaching series and leave with the skill to confidently teach one-hour classes.
