Suffice it to say that the last year has been stressful. Even if we’ve resisted the temptation to pull our hair out juggling work and kids, the stress might still show on our heads. In a March 4 article in Nature, a Harvard research team reveals how chronic stress inhibits the regrowth phase of the hair’s natural shedding and growth cycle.

According to researchers at Nutrafol, a company that produces nutritional supplements to counteract hair loss, stress is just one of many reasons we can lose our hair. Possible physiological causes include inflammation, an imbalance in the gut microbiome, an improperly functioning thyroid, and deficiency in certain nutrients, especially vitamin D, iron, zinc, selenium, biotin, and amino acids.

What we put on our hair makes a difference too. In general, Nutrafol warns against any hair products containing heavy chemicals: 

“Applying chemicals to the hair via products (especially coloring or bleaching agents) can lead to damage known as traumatic alopecia. Harsh chemicals in everyday hair care products can also cause irritation and inflammation to both the scalp and hair follicle. Whenever possible, choose products with more natural ingredients. Look for keywords on labels such as ‘organic,’ ‘non-GMO’ and ‘paraben-free.’”
