Aging gracefully—I’ve seen plenty of my family members manage it beautifully, and now that
I’m stepping into that stage myself, I wonder how I’ll fare. Good genes run in the family, and
I’ve been fortunate to enjoy many years with my loved ones. Growing older, as they say, is
“better than the alternative,” but how can we do it without feeling every creak and crunch along
the way?
For the most part, I indulge in the suggestions that Dr. Jillian Finker advises in her article "Tips for Graceful Aging”—except for the last tip, #5: Releasing your fears. That one’s a tough
one for me. Without a magical Benjamin Button potion to turn back time and add a few extra
years, how can we fully embrace the next chapter?
Aging gracefully is, without a doubt, about mindset and finding joy. With the right outlook,
we’re more likely to make healthy choices that add to our lives rather than take from them. One
of the most powerful practices is cultivating self-gratitude—knowing that each day we’re gifted
the chance to wake up, we have an opportunity to shape the path ahead.
I often catch myself longing for days gone by or wishing I had more time ahead, but I know
that’s not the healthiest way to age. Instead, I choose to honor the strength of my body, the
resilience of my mind, and the path I’ve traveled. And yet, there’s a fire within—a sense that
there’s still so much left to experience, create and explore.
As my bucket list grows and I start checking off more boxes, spending quality time with Michael
and our adult boys—and watching them reach their goals—feels like the ultimate victory in
aging gracefully.
