Growing up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, my bedroom in our apartment was truly my world. No backyard, no garage, no winding neighborhood roads—just the comforting rhythm of apartment living. But beyond those walls, the city held its own kind of magic. As I grew older, my oasis became New York City’s parks, especially Central Park. I still remember the joy of riding my bike when the roads were closed to traffic, climbing up the big rocks to people-watch, reading under the canopy of massive trees, playing tennis, or sailing my little boat at the model boat pond. Each moment was a slice of freedom in the concrete jungle.
When summer rolled around, nothing beat the excitement of a day trip to Jones Beach—Field 6, to be exact. Hopping on a bus from midtown, Long Island’s coastline became my personal getaway—a salty-aired escape from the city’s noise and heat.
These days, I find serenity in unexpected places, like the many small waterfalls scattered throughout the city. My favorite is Paley Park on 53rd and Madison—a tiny, tucked-away alcove where the sound of cascading water drowns out the buzz of Midtown. Just a few minutes there can refresh my entire spirit.
And now, as a so-called “mature” adult and empty nester, I’ve discovered a new outdoor obsession: birds. Their chirping, colors and quirky behaviors have quietly become a source of joy. Why is it that birdwatching becomes such a fascination later in life?
This month’s issue is filled with stories to inspire your own sense of wonder and connection. On page 17, experience a moving account of spiritual awakening through the darshan of Paramahamsa Vishwananda—a rare and transformative moment of unconditional love. On page 18, explore how microadventures can bring joy and clarity just steps from your front door. And on page 20, journey to Margaça, a breathtaking garden sanctuary on the island of Flores, where nature and stillness offer deep renewal.
Wherever you are—in the city, on the Island, or somewhere in between—I encourage you to step outside, leave your phone behind, and enjoy Natural Awakenings magazine in your own outdoor oasis.
Until our next walk in the park—or barefoot stroll along the beach,

Always in your health,
Michael
