Honoring Every Holiday Heart
As the year comes to a close and the holiday season begins to sparkle around us, it can be easy to assume that everyone is swept up in joy. But for many, this time of year carries a more complex emotional landscape. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, lonely, or simply out of step with the festivities, please know that you are not alone—and there is no “right” way to feel during the holidays.
Our feature article on page 16 reminds us that joy is not something to manufacture on demand. Instead, it grows when we allow ourselves to be present with what’s real, soften our expectations, and create space for small, nourishing moments. A gentle breath, a quiet evening, or the simple act of acknowledging your own needs can open the door to a more grounded, authentic experience of the season.
Another way to reconnect with meaning—especially when joy feels elusive—is through giving. On page 11, we highlight several NYC and Long Island nonprofits that make it easy to extend warmth where it’s needed most. Whether it’s donating a coat through New York Cares, helping City Harvest feed families, supporting God’s Love We Deliver, contributing to The Bowery Mission, or empowering youth through Harlem Grown, each act of generosity becomes a thread of connection.
Long Islanders can also find meaningful ways to offer support—from Long Island Cares’ holiday food drive to Island Harvest’s turkey collections, John Theissen Children’s Foundation’s toy drive, the United Way’s wish list, and The INN’s vital services for those facing hunger and homelessness. These organizations remind us that even when our own hearts feel tender, we can still kindle warmth in the world.
So if this season feels heavy, let your gentleness be your guide. Honor whatever you’re feeling, and know that small moments of presence—and small acts of kindness—can create unexpected openings of light.
Wishing you peace, compassion, and genuine connection as we move into a new year.
